A Tender Word

“Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.” (Proverbs 16: 24 KJV)

I think if someone would have said a kind encouraging word and given Jesus a hug on that dark and tragic day when He was crucified, I believe the agony and pain in His heart would have been a little more bearable. Not only was His body crucified, His heart was also crucified by rejection, criticism, sarcasm and unbelief. When He was in the garden praying He had asked them to watch and pray with Him but they fell asleep. I believe when He saw them sleeping it was as if someone had taken a knife and plunged it deep into His heart.

We weren’t there that day to watch and pray with Him but we can watch and pray with Him now. How many times has our heart broken over a friend who is hurting and we wept and prayed for him or her? More important, how many times have we prayed and asked God to make people stop rejecting, ignoring and hurting Jesus?

We weren’t there to give Jesus a hug but the Bible says “And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me”. (Matthew 25:40) Every time that we hug someone, we are hugging Jesus. When we say kind, tender and encouraging words to someone, we are saying them to Jesus. When we say critical, sarcastic and unkind words to someone, we are saying them to Jesus and plunging the knife a little deeper into His heart. Have you said something kind and loving to your loved ones and friends today? When is the last time you hugged them? Do they know you love them? More important than that, does Jesus know you love Him?
