What About our Children?

“Therefore shall ye lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes. And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.” (Deuteronomy 11:18, 19 KJV)

I read an article in the newspaper yesterday regarding the protection of trees. It said that some people are concerned that we are not doing enough to protect the trees. How sad, dear people, that we spend so much time and invest so much money in protecting trees, yet we do nothing about protecting our children. If we were to invest as much money and spend as much time in protecting our children emotionally, spiritually and physically as we do for the preservation of trees, our homes would be filled with love instead of homes where children are being abused.

Jesus has given parents a commandment to teach their children about Him. We, as parents, fail so often in this area. Rather than teaching our children about Jesus and His unconditional love for them, we are teaching them about the things of satan. My Mother told me many times when I was a child “Don’t do as I do, do as I say.” That is not what Jesus teaches us to do. We are to set the example for our children. Our children should hear us praising Jesus and see us reading our Bibles and praying. Instead of teaching our children to follow Jesus, we are teaching them to follow the ways of satan.

There are very few things on television that adults should watch so when we allow our children to watch movies and shows that have violence, sex, cursing, hatred, drugs, alcohol and all other things that hurt Jesus, we are teaching our children about satan instead of teaching them about Jesus and His unconditional love for them. I have heard people say, “These things happen in the real world so why shouldn’t I let my children watch those movies and shows on television?”

One day, all of us who are parents will stand before a Holy God and give an account of the way we raised our children. Think how you would feel if He would look at you with sadness in His eyes and ask you why you didn’t teach your children about Jesus. I believe that a lot of parents are going to have to hang their heads in shame.

What about our children? What are we doing to protect our children from seeing all these negative things that give them wrong values? Again, how sad it is that we invest our time and money in material things that we don’t need instead of investing our money and our time in our children. We must spend time with our children even if it means that we have to shut off the television. Are you teaching your children to serve Jesus or are you teaching them to serve satan?
