The Holidays

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.” (Revelation 21:4 KJV)

A friend of mine who I have known for over twelve years is a mental health counselor. A couple of years ago when we were talking on the telephone about holidays my friend said “More people get depressed and commit suicide over the holidays than at any other time”.

It doesn’t matter if it is a spouse, a child, a parent or another loved one who has died, the grief and sorrow are the same. We think about our loved ones more during the holidays than at any other time of the year. It is so important that we comfort and encourage people who have lost loved ones.

A lady whose husband had been dead for two months was talking to a friend. She said “People don’t understand that when somebody has lost a loved one they need to be comforted and encouraged for a long time, not just during the funeral and the day after the funeral”.

If anyone understands how much it hurts when a loved one dies, it is our Heavenly Father. Not only did His beloved Son die, His Son was tortured and beaten beyond recognition and crucified on a cross of horror. God’s heart must have shattered into millions of tiny pieces when His Son was crucified on that cross.

Heavenly Father, I pray that You would please comfort all of us who have lost loved ones. We know that our loved ones are with You but the empty spot in our hearts is still there. May we be an encouragement to each other during the holidays. Amen.
