The Kindness of the King

"And the king said, Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may show the kindness of God unto him? And Ziba said unto the king, Jonathan hath yet a son, which is lame on his feet." (2 Sam 9:3)

We are told in 2 Sam. 4 that Mephibosheth had just been 5 years old when the news about Saul and Jonathan's death arrived.  His nurse had so feared for his life that she took him and fled, and in so doing, Mephibosheth fell and became crippled. (2 Sam 4:4).  In that day and age, it was customary for a new king to have anyone belonging to the family of the previous king killed, and because of this, all of Saul's family feared David.  But what did David do instead?  Is there not yet any of the house of Saul, that I may show the kindness of God unto him?

The story goes on to say that in spite of the fact that Mephibosheth was lame, David restored everything that had belonged to Saul and his family to Mephibosheth.  He gave him his father's faithful servant to care for him, and he even invited him to personally eat from his table.

Isn't this a beautiful example of what God has done for us?  So many of us are running from God.  Nevertheless, He pursues after us.  We are "lame" with sin, yet God desires us to eat at His table.  He desires to restore to us the land of our fathers, and to give us the strength we need to occupy it.  But what must we do?  That's the Good News!  All we have to do, like Mephibosheth, is ACCEPT the gift!

Love in Christ,
