We are so Few ... How can we Feed so Many? -- By Lyn Chaffart

Jesus said, "Feed my lambs." (John 21:15)

The great commission:  Feed My lambs!  Sounds easy enough, doesn't it?  Yet how much feeding actually happens with most Christians?  How many Christians feel they have the resources, the time, the energy, the help, to adequately provide the spiritual food that is needed by those around them?  Instead of responding with a hearty "Yes!  Of course!", don't we usually cry out something like this instead:  "Feed Your lambs, Lord?  But Lord, there isn't enough food!  How can I feed Your lambs when I don't receive the food I need at church?  The need is so great, the true workers so few!  There's so much to be done, so little time, money, energy, and conviction to do it!  Lord, what could You possibly mean when You tell me to "feed [Your] lambs"?

Food was one of Jesus' principle concerns when He walked our earth. Twice He provided literal food for thousands of people, both times when there simply wasn't enough actually food to feed even a handful!  And both times, Jesus' disciples responded the way you and I often do: "But where in this remote place can anyone get enough bread to feed them?" (Mark 8:9.

Jesus concerns Himself not only for the condition of our stomachs, but also for the spiritual food that our hearts so desperately need!  When He fed the 4000, Jesus cried out:  "I have compassion for these people . . . If I send them home hungry, they will collapse on the way"  And this same compassion is what compelled Him to tell Peter to:  "Feed my lambs." (John 21:15), for without spiritual food, we will collapse along the roads of life!

Jesus provided His disciples with enough literal food to feed thousands of people and have basketsful left over: "When he had taken the seven loaves and given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to set before the people, and they did so . . . The people ate and were satisfied. Afterward the disciples picked up seven basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. About four thousand men were present." (Mark 8:6-9)  Does it not stand to reason that He can also provide each of us with the Spiritual food we will need to "Feed [His] lambs"?

Lord, I often feel there is no central "food bank" where I have been placed to "Feed [Your] lambs".  Yet You can feed so many with so little . . . Lord, I beg you to feed those You have placed in my care!  You have already provided the seven loaves of bread.  Bless them, Lord, and give me the faith I need to distribute them, so that they will multiply and be enough to feed everyone!
