Why Pray? Part 1 -- By Lyn Chaffart

Why should we pray, anyway?  Just what is the point of having a "prayer ministry"?  Dumb question, you may say.  After all, this newsletter is part of Answers2Prayer, an internet prayer ministry!  Yes, the answers to this question does seem kind of obvious, doesn't it?  But sometimes it is important to have a little reminder about the importance of prayer, just to keep us on our toes!  That is the purpose of this mini-sermon "mini"-series entited, "Why Pray".  Look for part 2 in next Friday's newsletter!

If you are an avid reader of the Answers2Prayer newsletter, it probably didn't take you more than one or two publications to realize that the majority of those we prayer for daily are really in desperate need!  Sometimes the need is financial, sometimes spiritual, sometimes emotional.  But almost all are in desperate need.  If this is what we are coming across on a daily basis, could I ask you to think about what the very best thing you can do for someone whose soul is distressed to the point of death is?  Should you send them a card?  Give them a hug?  Call them up to cheer them up?  Perhaps send them an inspirational e-mail or a book on how to handle depression?  What about offering them Bible studies?  Telling them they are under Satanic attack?  Have I hit upon the "best" yet?

Jesus knew just what it was like to be in desperate need.  In the Garden of Gethsemane, He cries out to His closest friends:  "My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death!" (Mark 14:34a).  But notice just what He asks them to do about it!  "Stay here and keep watch" (Mark 14:34b), and later, "Watch and pray  . . ." (Mark 14:38a)

So where is the card?  The phone call?  The request for His disciples to inform Him that He is under Satanic attack?  Where is the cry for a hug?  Or an inspirational e-mail?  Not there!  Jesus' request is simple:  "Watch and pray . . ."!  He wanted His closest friends to pray for Him!

But they didn't.  Mark 14:37 says:  "Then He returned to His disciples and found them sleeping."  Such a simple request, and they didn't do it.

"But what does it matter?" you may ask.  After all, Luke 22:43 tells us that an angel from heaven appeared to Jesus and strengthened Him!  In spite of the fact that His friends didn't pray for Him, He still received His help!

But this was Jesus!  Most of us in desperate need are far too distressed to even pray!  This is evident in many of the prayer requests published in this newsletter!  And if we are too distressed to even pray, then we need the prayers of others!

Lord, help me to see every time one of your dear children is "overwhelmed with sorrow . . ."  Help me to remember that the most effective thing I can do for each one of them is to pray!  Lord, "The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective." (James 5:16).  Let me NOT sleep when there are others in need!!!
