Why Study Prophecy?
"The LORD has done what He planned; he has fulfilled his word, which he decreed long ago. He has overthrown you without pity, he has let the enemy gloat over you, he has exalted the horn of your foes." (Lam 2:17)
The destruction of Jerusalem. It was foretold by
numerous prophets in the ages of the kings, but it was
even prophesied by Moses, hundreds of years earlier!
Deut 28:41: "You will have sons and daughters but you
will not keep them, because they will go into captivity."
(See also verses 38-42). Yet, despite these
warnings, the people continue in their own ways, as if
expecting that either God didn't really mean what He said,
or that it couldn't possibly happen in their day!
But God did mean what He said. After giving
countless chances to the Jews to mend their ways and
return to the Lord, God had no other choice but to allow
the Babylonian captivity. He had to get their
attention. He did "what He planned" and He
"fulfilled His word"!
But what does this have to do with us, today?
The fall of Jerusalem is not the only prophecy in
the Bible, my friends! The Bible also prophecies a
much greater destruction: The destruction of
all those who have not accepted Jesus as their
personal Lord and Savior! Rev 20:14-15: "Then
death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. The
lake of fire is the second death. If anyone's name was not
found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the
lake of fire."
The Jews should have paid attention to prophecy.
Let's learn from their mistake and not follow in their
footsteps. For we can be assured that as surely as
God did what He had planned and fulfilled His word in the
destruction of Jerusalem, He will also do what He has
planned and fulfill His word in the destruction of the
wicked! Let's not ignore this important prophecy.
Let's not just figure that it can't happen in our day.
Instead, safeguard yourself against sure destruction!
