It Hurts Too Much to Keep Going

“And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.” (Matthew 26: 39 KJV)

I have received several emails in the last three weeks from people who are brokenhearted, discouraged and hurting because their children are on drugs. I have also received emails from people who are devastated because they are going through a divorce. One person wrote “It hurts too much to keep going. How can I keep going?” We have so much hurt and so much sorrow in this sinful world that we are living in today.

I know how it feels to hurt and have a broken heart because I was raped on Thanksgiving Day twenty nine years ago. This time of the year is always difficult for me because it reminds me of my precious daughter who was born as a result of that rape. I had to place my daughter for adoption when she was five months old because I didn’t have the money to take care of her. The memory of having to leave my daughter at the adoption agency is just as painful today as it was the day I left her there.

There have been several times since I left her at the agency that I also have felt “It hurts too much to keep going. How can I keep going?” Yet, even though this time of the year brings painful and frightening memories back to me, I know that Jesus has not left me and that He will get me through this painful time as He has been faithful to do for these last twenty nine years. I believe when Jesus prayed that day that He was also thinking “It hurts too much to keep going. How can I keep going?” Just as Jesus kept going, so you and I should keep going.

When we are heartbroken and hurting and feel like we can’t go on, He is there for us. However, nobody was there to comfort and encourage Him that day. No one hugged Him and said I understand. Even His own mother, as much as she loved Him, couldn’t tell Him that everything was going to be okay. How her heart much have broken into millions of little pieces as she had to stand there and watch her Son abused, cursed, spat upon, and beaten beyond recognition.

If you are hurting today, tell Jesus. He understands how you feel and He really does care about you. He loves you with a love that is impossible to express in mere words. Give all of your heartaches, burdens, sorrows and pain to Jesus. He is more than able to bring you through every trial victoriously. He will take your hand and walk with you through the dark valleys and will once again put you on the mountain top of joy and happiness. There is no one like Jesus! What a Saviour! What a friend, this Jesus of Nazareth!
