Under Surveillance
I was in a shop the other day, looking for a particular item. I went along
the shelf, searching, shifting items, reading labels and looking at them
closely. For all I knew there could have been surveillance cameras recording my
every move but I simply did not care.
Surveillance cameras have become a reality in our lives. Sometimes you see them
staring down from a high place and surveying a whole area and at other times,
you do not have any idea they are around or where they may be lurking.
They are a barometer of our attitudes and motives. Actually I was very pleased I
was being watched because it meant that the sales lady finally asked if I needed
help. I surely did and was grateful to her.
She was a reminder that ‘The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous; his ears are
open to their cry’ and we do not mind being watched when it is for our own good.
Jesus told us that a sparrow does not fall to the ground without our Father’s
knowing and even the hairs of our head are numbered. We like it because it means
we are under the watchful eye of love.
But there is a reminder also that ‘The Lord sets his face against wrongdoers to
cut off all memory of them from the earth.’
Being under surveillance actually tells us as much about ourselves as it tells
anyone else.
