God's Sweetener

“Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.” (Proverbs 16:24 KJV)

I love strawberries. Once I bought some and put them in the refrigerator to get cold. The next morning when I started to eat them, they didn’t taste right. I had forgotten to put sugar on them to sweeten them and they didn’t taste very good. It reminded me of the condition of our hearts before Jesus sweetens them.

Until Jesus, who is God’s sweetener, removes the bitterness, the resentment, the unforgiveness and the criticism from our hearts, we hurt our families, our friends and all those around us. These rotten attitudes stink in the nostrils of Jesus. Only Jesus can remove these rotten attitudes and sweeten our hearts so that people will know that we are Christians.

Peter Scholtes wrote a beautiful song “They’ll Know We Are Christians by Our Love”. Do people know that we are Christians by the things we say and do? Are we making Jesus happy or are we hurting Him and making Him sad by the things we say and do? Remember, when we hurt people we are also hurting Jesus. It’s time that we stop hurting our precious Saviour!

What about your family? Does your family know that you are a Christian by the kind words you say to them and the kind things you do for them? Are you constantly finding fault with things they do or do you look for ways to encourage them? Have you allowed Jesus to sweeten your heart so that your family, your friends and everyone you meet know that you are a Christian? What condition is your heart in today? Is it filled with bitterness or is it filled with the sweetness of the love of Jesus?
